Introduction to Sewing

The objective of this workshop is to introduce you to the sewing machine, to basic functions and begin sewing.  You will take away three sewn projects, items needed to start you on your sewing journey.  Included: fabric and materials for the projects, use of a sewing machine.

 

  1. Basic anatomy of a sewing machine​

  2. Loading a bobbin

  3. Threading the machine

    1. Including bringing bobbin thread to work surface

  4. Choosing a needle. Color coding.

  5. Cleaning and basic maintenance

  6. Prepare the fabric

 

Getting started

7. Practice stitching on a scrap

 

Sewing

8. Pincushion

Skills: straight stitch, back tacking, pivot at corners, turning a piece inside out, trimming corners, stuffing with fiber fill, and hand ladder stitch to close.


9. Scissor holder

skills: cutting fabric, cutting a curve, applying interfacing, top stitching, turning right side out and shaping corners.

 

10. Thread catcher basket

skills: applying interfacing, boxing corners, matching/aligning seams
